Hi
My name is Dave, I'm a 23 year old Design Draughtsman from Southend-on-Sea.
I currently work for the company IPECO Holdings LTD, which is found over at Southend airport. I have recently finished a craft apprenticeship where I was trained firstly as a precision machinist, then secondly as a Design Draughtsman, which added up to 4 years. After 1 year of the apprenticeship I was offered the chance to train towards becoming a designer, something I was very interested in, so I gladly accepted the interview and managed to get the position. At the end of the apprenticeship I was offered the position of Design Draughtsman.
As a design draughtsman, my work involves Computer Aided Design (CAD) on the design package CATIA, through this I create 3D models/assemblies and then the drawings that the machinists and assemblers will use to make the parts. On top of this I need to write many various reports and procedures for the Environmental/Dynamic and Static testing that is carried out on each test.
IPECO are a fairly large company in the aerospace industry, primarily the company make flight deck seating for most aircraft companies, as well as executive passenger seats and divans for business jets. The company has also recently become more involved in the creation of galley equipment for aircraft's, which is what I have been assigned to work on. On finishing my ONC course at South East Essex College in Thurrock, my managers offered me the opportunity to continue my study at Anglia Ruskin, making the step up to HNC. The HNC is seen as a needed a qualification for the level of design draughtsman, so it is something I feel is needed to further my career. I also hope to use this to move up the qualification ladder towards degree level.
